NIGHTMARE ON HOME FURNISHINGS STREET IRELAND 1: MATCHING WOOD COLOURS

Everyone holds opinions and preferences for whether all woods in each room should match or not, however as the saying goes, “Doctors differ, patients die!” It’s your home so you must be able to live with whatever you choose! This stands to sense.

Do you seek perfection and try to match existing wood colours in doors, skirting or flooring? Or, are you content to add an additional wood or wood colour to an existing room? Again, this is a personal choice so do what makes you feel best. However a word of warning!

Trying to be exact in matching wood colours can be often be an almost impossible task. If you have bought real wood product then the wood colours will mature and change over time. In this way the colour of your furniture at home will have changed relative to a new piece “fresh out of the box”. This is because real wood, as a natural material, reacts to sunshine and light by changing in shading. Some woods react quite noticeably and will change enormously (e.g. walnut, pine and cherry), other woods change very little (light oaks, heavily stained woods). So in this sense, trying to match wood colours or wood stains can be a moving target.

And if you do start trying to match wood colours in furniture, floors, skirting, door, staircases where do you draw the line? Over the years I have been asked for every colour of wood and much more: recently we had a young couple who took a sample of flooring into our showroom to see how it would look under their sofa of choice! (It actually looked quite well!) Others shoppers will avoid creating a contrast in the wood finishes of existing pieces in their room, by adding something completely different. For example customers will often choose a mirrored or glass door sliding wardrobe which will not look out of place with bedroom cabinetry (say in mahogany or cherry wood finishes).

Another example in the hallway is where customers will choose a radiator cabinet in a painted finish rather than try and pick a wood finish which will have to sit opposite the staircase or doorways. The painted finish (especially creams) sit alongside other colours with ease. Consumers can call in to the Drumbriston Furniture outlet on the Dublin Rd, Monaghan Town for a full selection of these and more products.
